State Police Official Threatened With Death Unless Activities Be Curtailed; Ten Stills in Latest Raid

May 4—-Despite threats to kill nnd a definite atttempt to poison booth he and his men, Liutenant Mack B. Li1ly, commander of the Breedon detachment of State police, is continuing- his whirlwind campaign to rid "Wayne, Lincoln ' and Mingo counties of stills. and he has just returned after a week's camping in the woods with his men, during which they raided right and left in the Harts Creek country and seized 10 stills, carloads of still equipment, 2,880gallons of mash, much moonshine and made 11 arrests. "Nothing out of the ordinary happened on this trip except that three of us were fired upon from the hills, while we were destroying a still on Brown's run," the Lieutenant reported, "We climbed the hills to try and find the would-be assassins but could find no trace of them." "With Lieutenant Lilly on the raid were Corporal Ward and Private Curnutto, Tickle, Goodykoontz and Bridewell. They were mounted and carried army fleld equipment, mess kits, reserve rations and all provisions enabled them to stay in the woods until they had completed the raid. During the week they vlslted the following creeks in their raid; Twelve Pole,- Lefthand fork; Trace branch, Smoke House, Little and Big 'Harts creek. White Oak, Browns run. West Fork of Harts creek, Pitney branch, Colo creek, Can fork, Crawley creek, Tims fork, Brushy fork. Butcher branch, Lilly branch, Adams branch and many other small creeks, riding In all 175 miles on the one raid. Each of the 10 men arrested on charge of operating; stills was taken before United States Commissioner Hager, at Logan, who held them all to the federal grand jury. Bail was fixed at $3,000 each In the cases of John Farmer, Noah Alonzo and Dike Bryant, Louis Conley, William Abbott, and Albert and Jessie Dingess. Commissioner Hager made the bail $5,000 In the case Lenard Dingess and Ora Butcher. Everett Conley, who is out on $5,000 bail following his arrest on a still charge during one of Lieutenant Lillly's numerous raids, met the trooper on the road to Harts creek and under took to whip one of them. He was quickly subdued and arrested on a drunk and disorderly charge. The two stills captured ran in size from 35 to the 90 gallon capacity variety, and with the exception of one tub still and two gasoline drums. were made of copper. Ten cooling kegs, 48 mash barrels, scores of crocks, jars and other containers and quantities of still provisions, In addition to equipmcnt, were confiscated.
