Dell Doss, Garland Doss and Billy FarmerCHARLESTON DAILY MAIL JULY 15, 1927

Most of the day yesterday was consumed by the circuit court in trying Dell Doss, Garland Doss and Billy Farmer, charged with violation of the Red Man's act in that they conspired to do bodily harm to Lee Ratliff. Kay Workman was also indicted with the trio but turned states evidence. The assult is alledged to have taken place on Smoke House Fork of Hart's Creek on May 11, at the home of Garland Conley, at which time Garland Doss received the full charge of a shot gun blast in the left leg and it was amputated. The jury found the trio guilty of assault and Judge Bland sentenced them to jail for six months and fined them $50 each. (My GreatGrandmother Lula Workman Conley, wife of Galand Fly Conley, was the one who shot Garland in the leg. My dad told this story many times.) |
