Matson Smith, younger brother of Circuit Clerk Sherman Smith, was acquitted of maiming by a jury in Logan circuit court Wednesday afternoon. The trial was the outcome for a shooting on Tims Fork of Crawley's creek, Sunday, December 3, when Smith was said to have shot EIbert Mounts and Virgil Conley in I a row over a young woman. Mounts was shot in "the shoulder" and Conley was more seriously hurt witha bullet wound in the neck. A plea of self-defense was made by Smith, who claimed that Conley attempted to "knife" him before the gun-play began.
