Zan Bryant, the oldest person in Logan county, died Friday at the home of his son, Dyke Bryant, at the head of Buck Fork of Harts Creek. "Uncle Zan" himself on the occasion of his last visit to Logan on Oct. 7--which was his only visit here in a couple of decades--said he was 104. Others who had long known him believe he was 101 or at any rate around the century mark. He was brought here for medical treatment and gradually grew weaker after his return home. Funeral sevices were conducted on Sunday by Rev. G. W. Hensley. Burial in the family cemetery at the head of Smokehouse Fork. Uncle Zan was a Confederate soldier and a comrade of Devil Anse Hatfield. Mrs. Bryant died last May. She was credited with 96 years, but if the generally accepted report that she was married at the age of 16 in 1855 is true she was 92 at her death. Her maiden name was Judie Hensley and she was a daughter of George Hensley(mother wasJudith Conley), said to have been among the first, white men in this section. Zan Bryant was a son of Corbin Bryant, an early settler from Virginia, and was born on Flat Top mountain, but "I came to Logan county when I was big enough to hoe corn," he said recently. After the Civil War he was converted and baptized by Uncle Dyke Garrett. For many years or until growing infirmities made it inadvisable for them to live alone, the aged couple lived on teh Oak Fork of Harts, Mrs. Bryant having been a native and lifelong resident of theat section. They are survivied by the following children, in addition to Dyke: Dave Bryant. '75, Buck Fork: Lucinda wife of Paris Spry of Twelvepole section in Mingo, and Wade Bryant. Two other children, John and Martha Jane, wife of Bert Smith of Mt. Gay, preceded their mother in death by a few months.
