Squirrel Fishing

A class by Jessie

In this class we will learn the fine art of Squirrel Fishing. An outdoor activity that should delight the best hunter out there. This sport takes time and patience and a lot of skill, but definately worth the extra effort. So here is my patented two-step program for Squirrel Fishing.

I have heard it said that a squirrel will always give up one acorn if another one is thrown nearby. Not too bright on the squirrels part, but that did give me an idea for a new sport called Squirrel Fishing.

I wondered if I could get a squirrel to eat a peanut or acorn tied to a long piece of string or fishing pole. The worst we could do would be to toss the peanut at the squirrel and not have him try to eat it,

Next best would be for the squirrel to notice the peanut, and then have him follow it as I drag it through the grass. The aiming accuracy of the towing process can be greatly increased by attaching a weight to the string about 3 inches from the end.

The next point on the performance scale of Squirrel Fishing is the willingness of the squirrel to grab the peanut and hold on to it. All you need is a peanut, a fishing rod or stick with a string, and a squirrel.

Step One: Attach the peanut to the end of your pole. You must make sure that it is firmly attached or the crafty squirrel will just run off with it.

One caution here, the squirrel is known to attempt biting through the string, so always be cautious. Low-quality string can cause you to loose your trophy squirrel.

Step Two: Cast the peanut as far out as you can, this will take some practice, so keep trying. You have to get the nut far enough away from you so that the squirrel isn't alarmed by your presence. Dangle the string over a limb if possible so that it entices him over to it without him noticing you at the other end.

LIFT OFF!!!

The highest marks you can get in the squirrel performance scale is achieved when the squirrel is willing to hold on to the peanut or string while it is being lifted off the ground.

This only lasts for a very short time and is very difficult to achieve. If it is done correctly, you will then have yourself a Squirrel on the end of your fishing pole. And you will be the champion Squirrel Fisher that I know you can be.

Of course you realize that we fish and release, that is best for the ecology. However, if you must chase the squirrel, you have to drop the pole and run like the wind, because once he realizes that you are on the other end of the string, he will be gone in a flash.

A smarter squirrel will discover after a while that it is better to bite through the string than simply pull on the peanut.

Ok Students it is time to Take Your Exam, I hope you studied.
