Viewed as a series of slow flowing movements, tai-chi is actually a non-impact aerobic exercise that integrates movement and breathing exercises. It is the integration of these two aspects of tai-chi that results in both physical and mental well-being While the movements of tai-chi appear simple in nature and execution, they are actually quite complex, involving both concentration and balance. Although breathing may seem secondary to some, it is perhaps the more important aspect of tai-chi. The breathing techniques employed in this approach to tai-chi require a deeper inhalation and as such, a slower exhalation. Through the continued practice and development of this technique, one will eventually experience an increase in breathing capacity as well as an improvement of both balance and coordination. It is the combination of the movements and the breathing that makes tai-chi an effective method of stress reduction and relaxation.
