NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 1999

Osiyo! We're slowly recovering from the computer crash, and the letters and articles are coming in again. I've almost caught up and BTTB Journal should once again be getting to you all in a timely fashion.

One thing I hadn't mentioned in the last journal was the malathion spraying that we underwent at the end of the summer and early fall.

It began one afternoon when Evergreen, Little Horse and I went for a walk around the neighborhood, windowshopping, picking up a few back-to-school items. It was a very hot day and since we don't have (or want) air conditioning, we lingered outside to avoid the overheated apartment.

The sky looked a bit cloudy and we returned home, and I received a call from a neighbor (and fellow Green) who asked me what I thought about the spraying.
"What spraying?"
"The one they started fifteen minutes ago. A couple of people have died from St. Louis encephalitis and Mayor Giuliani is spraying Queens with a chemical called malathion. He's spraying our area of Flushing, and you're supposed to close your windows and stay inside between the hours of 5 and 9 PM. The airplanes began spraying fifteen minutes ago, and trucks have been spraying the streets all morning."
"WHAT???!!I'll call you back!
