Belize was known as British Honduras some decades ago. Belize is a former British colony located on the eastern coast of Central America. To the North, we are bordered by Mexico, West and South: Guatemala, and East: the Caribbean Sea.
British Honduras was claimed by Spain, but was never settled by Spain. British Buccaneers settled here and started to cut logwood trees. After several treaties and disagreements between Spain and the UK, Spain attacked us in September 1798. On the 10th September 1798, we had the largest confrontation of the battle and drove off the Spanish Armada.
We had indentured labor and slavery, but unlike the rest of the Caribbean, Belize's slaves did not work sugar plantations, but rather (side by side with their masters) cutting logwood and mahogany trees.
Years after the abolition of slavery and the adoption of Universal Adult Sufferage, on the 21st September, 1981, we declared our independence from the UK. We are now members of the British Commonwealth, OAS, and several other international organizations.
Belize is now well known for its offshore islands (cayes pronounced keys), tropical rainforests, Mayan pyramids and ruins, wild life, colonial buildings, and our environmental conservation. Come visit!
