Mr. Darv J. from Detroit Lakes, MN sent in these pics of a 1971 Kitty Cat. The '71's were a batch of "test" sleds (much like the '66 Black Panthers) and are quite different from the 1972 production Kitty Cats (and also note that the '72's were a little different from the 1973-99's). The '71's had a different front bulkhead and a silver flake fiberglass pan (like the King Kats had), among other diferences.

A - B

A) Darv notes: "Neat ID plate (just like the big Cats). Notice the difference in the back of the bulkhead. Power is a Clinton four-stroke. No gear reduction, just the centrifugal clutch. Also, someone put the bumper on upside-down."

B) "Reflectors are stock, as is the rear grab handle."

C - D

C) "Notice the heavy front bumper. The same as the "big" Cats."

D) "The hood and pan are fiberglass. There is no kill switch built into the handle grip. Front hood vent is the same one used on the '71 Kohler/Wankel Panther/Puma hood. The skis use hood trim on the tips and have a "V" shaped keel."

E - F

E) "The steering and bulkhead are totally different than a 1972/1973-99. uses a piano hinge for the hood."

F) "Fiberglass chain guard. Hood is held down with pins through the locating brackets."

WE HAVE A WINNER!

The ACCA/Rick Tarr hood raffle had 56 entries go into the hat (yes, it was an Arctic Cat hat) and my lovely wife Peg pulled out the name of ...

CHRIS PIEPER, member #0031, from Sanford, MI!

Congratulations Chris!

As soon as Chris lets me know what item he chose, I will post it. And, with the wonderful response from the membership for this raffle, I am already working on another one for later this spring!

Member Terry M. sent me a letter, along with his renewal (and thank you for your continued support!), and is looking for some info. He is looking for any info (manuals, brochures, etc.) on the 1965 Model 120. He is also looking for info about a Hirth 54R (300 cc) that has booster ports, shortened piston, and a .220 overbore (which would make it about 347 cc). If you have any info to share, send it to me via e-mail at pwustrack@dotnet.com, or snail-mail at Paul Wustrack, PO Box 528, Rosendale, WI 54974.

*** NEW! - NEW! - NEW! ***

Rick Tarr of Malvern, OH is making repro fiberglass parts. He sent me the following note:

"Here are the molds that I currently have (and I am adding parts almost weekly)...

  • 1970 Puma MOD hood
  • 1970 and up Puma/Lynx/EXT/Cheetah dash
  • 1970-71 Puma jackshaft dash
  • 1971 EXT hood
  • 1971 King Kat belly pan
  • 1971-72 Panther/Puma/Lynx/EXT/Cheetah belly pan

I have the fiberglass machine cranked up and will add new parts weekly! My quality will not be beat. I don't have a web site (yet), heck, I don't even have a company name... I'm just a guy selling high quality fiberglass at prices that won't be beat by anyone. For those who looked at, and bought, my stuff at the A-1 show know that my parts are top notch. I will also reproduce other makes for people who are willing to pay the mold costs."

"I'm working on a web site and should have pics posted in the next couple of weeks - Rick Tarr, rick@sledbuilder.com."

PROJECTS UPDATE: Vintage Films: I know I've been teasing everyone about these films, and when they would be done... so, here's the scoop. I have sent a couple of the films to the new lab. Should know soon if they turned out in a week, or so. I'm keeping my fingers crossed...

UPDATE: I got the test transfers back and, again, the results were disappointing. But, I have a new plan... I am going to transfer the films in chronological order. The list of films include:

  • The Year Of The Cat - 1970
  • The Race - 1971
  • Safety Film-What Would You Do? - 1971
  • It's Going To Be A Beautiful Winter-1972 Sales Film - 1971
  • What'll they Think Of Next? - 1972
  • 1973 Accessory Film - 1972
  • 1973 Sales Film - 1972
  • The Winners - 1973
  • Tell Arctic - 1973
  • Getaway - 1973
  • West Yellowstone - 1974
  • Sno Pro - 1974
  • Not Just To Finish - 1975
  • The Hetteen Cup - 1976
  • The Big Ride - 1977
  • Eagle River - 1979

    >>>>>> ARCTIC CAT Purple Paint Codes! <<<<<<

As some of you may know, the old "Ditzler" paint codes, that have been floating around on the 'net for years, are being phased out by PPG. Recently, I took the old code for the Arctic Cat Purple to a paint store to see if it was still current and crossed over to a more modern number. It isn't, and wasn't.

So, I got hold of a Pantone Matching System color chart and took the "PMS 252" (as the Arctic purple is "officially" known) color sample back to the paint store. I also brought along an NOS 1971 Puma decal to match the 1971 decal color (as the 1971's are known to have that unique shade of purple on the decals).

Well, good news! They were able to match the samples to a current DuPont color code, so we can all get the "correct" Arctic Purple again. The samples, and paint codes are as follows:

  • Arctic Cat Purple, PMS-252 = DuPont RS151

    1971 Decal Purple = DuPont RS232

Please note: the color samples above were scaned and uploaded, and they are not exactly the same as "the real world" items, although I tried to adjust the color as close as possible.......
