New member Lyle K. has just got into collecting vintage sleds. He has a 1972 Panther and a 1971 Puma. He also has a couple of Vikings, a Chaparral, a Rupp, an Eskimo, a Roll-O-Flex, and a Ski Doo. The new sleds he rides are a '99 Powder Special 700, two '01 Mountain Cat 800s, an '03 1M 600, and he says he will be purchasing a new '07 M8. Lyle lives in MT, which would explain all the "mountain" sleds!

Okay boys and girls, have you seen the new 40th anniversary 2007 Panther? You gotta check it out! Arctic went full "retro" with the new Panther and I think it is awesome! I've got to figure out a way to get one of these... Go to the Arctic website (www.Arctic-Cat.com) and see for yourself.

I posted a couple of pics, below, in the "Featured Cat" section. I love how they made the pan silver and left the tunnel natural aluminum, just like the "old" ones. I also like how they put black skis on it and the black hood. They also put a silver "windshield strip" on the bottom of the 'shield and put chrome trim around the edge. And last, but not least, the 1967-69 style hood decals and the white/black leopard print seat vinyl! That's right, the leopard print is back! I wonder how close it is to the original '70s stuff, and if it is, how many folks are going to run down to their local dealer to buy some... LOL!

The new Panther comes in two styles: the longer "touring" chassis with a 370 or 570 two-stroke fan engine, or the 660 four-stroke liquid cooled. The other style is the short chassis "trail" version which only comes with the 660 four-stroke. The short sled is a bit non-traditional as it is listed as a one person ride, but can get an optional two-up seat for it to make it more like a "real" Panther. Both versions have a whole host of standard and optional features.

The one I would like to get (from a power-to-weight ratio point of view) is the longer chassis 570 fan. The 570 uses dual 34 Mikunis with a single pipe and puts out 62.5 horsepower, with the sled weight listed as 550 lbs. That makes for a pretty darn good 8.8 pounds per horsepower. Man, talk about cruisin' in "retro style"... I can see it now, me and the wife boppin' down the trail on our "new" black and silver Panther with a leopard print seat... It's a dream come true!
