The Flyers Sign Mark Eaton

By Kevin Neibauer

Earlier this week, the Philadelphia Flyers General Manager Bob Clarke signed a player out of the University of Notre Dame. Mark Eaton, who has one year of collegiate experience was highly recommended by his head coach, Dave Poulin. Poulin, a former Flyer referred Clarke to Eaton. Clarke claims that Mark Eaton is the best available non-drafted player in college today. The Flyers like Eatons size and quickness and the fact that he comes from the Philadelphia area shouldn't hurt ticket sales when Eaton joins the Philadelphia Phantoms come October. Bob Clarke seemed to hint that Eaton may warrant a look with the Flyers in the upcomiong season. The Phantoms team has gone through some major changes in a relatively quiet off-season for the Flyers. Craig Darby, Jeff Staples, Bruce Coles, and Garrett Burnett have all been moved elsewhere. Darby was selected by Nashville in the draft. Staples was traded to Nashville on draft day along with Dominic Roussel, and Burnett signed a contract with the San Jose Sharks and will play for the Kentucky Thoroughblades next season. Bruce Coles was traded to the IHL for a player named Mark Grieg, Grieg is pretty much a career minor-leaguer so he will be with the Phantoms. Calder Cup MVP, Mike Maneluk, will get a long look from the Flyers in training camp. As will Paul Healey, Healey needs to find a way to be a little more consistent and his strength is a question. With the nets being moved out for this season, guys like Maneluk could very well flourish in the NHL (not to mention obstruction calls).
