Flyers Draft Day
by Kevin Neibauer
The Philadelphia Flyers were extremely busy on Draft day. A few moves and a lot of picks. They started the day trading Dominic Roussel and Jeff Staples to the Nashville Predators for a 7th Round pick. Followed later in the day by the Paul Coffey trade to Chicago for a 5th Round pick. It seems entirely possible that the front office is clearing up some cash for the big Goaltender acquisition.
The team then made the following draft selections
1st Round: SIMON GAGNE
Born February 29,1980, Gagne played last season in the QMLHL with Quebec. A Center who shoots Left,Gagne is predicted to be a good playmaker with good hands. He is 6'-0",185 pounds, seems to be a good First Round Pick.
2nd Round: Jason Beckett
The book on the 6-foot-2 205 pound defenseman is that he's a good skater, good passer and a solid defensive type. He racked up 241 penalty minutes last season.
2nd Round: Ian Forbes
The other Second Rounder was Ian Forbes, standing at 6-foot-6 180 pounds, from Guelph of the WHL, another defensemen lefthanded shot. Again, a good skater, who is solid on his feet.
Rounding up the draft were Jean Phillipe Morin (4 round), Francis Belanger (5 round), Garrett Prosofsky (5 round), Antero Nittymaki (6 round), Cam Ondrick (7 round), Tomas Divisek (7 round), Lubomir Pistek (8 round), Petr Hubacek (9 round), Bruno St.Jacques (9 round) and Sergei Skrobat (9 round).
