Survival Music

Did you know it glows
at night, that it is alive
and creates her own
songs she sings
whether or not anyone is there
to learn or for you
to listen? And you must
learn how to listen, you must
know those songs
by heart, each note
for songs of a jungle at peace
can change
to tunes of warnings of war
and you must know
how to discern both. Quiet
can be deadly. Quiet
means the jungle is aware
of something you will learn
in a heart beating fast
somewhere beneath a sun
you will never see. At night
her voice changes, grows deep
within a phosphorescent glow
and you will come to know
that most all hunters kill
in melodies gone awry
and darkness? You must learn
to feel with ears listening
to your own beating heart.
Touching her pulse
you may learn to live
within her shadows
long enough to know her
siren songs and quiet
melodies. Did you know?
A jungle is a living thing
with a pulse that beats
in rhythms best learned
before that glow
becomes green fire
tacing the night.
You'll never even hear
what hit you. In her heat
you'll never hear her high notes
laid low, they fade
in full retreat just before
your own heart stops.
