Tassels and Ball

Created April 15, 1999 - Modified April 15, 1999

Chain Stitch (ch st) To start, tie a slip knot over hook - * thread over hook - and draw through a loop * - continue this until the required length is reached.
Slip Stitch (sl st) On a chain - put hook through the work - thread over hook - and draw through both stitch and loop on hook at the same time.
Single Crochet (sc) On a chain - put hook through the work - thread over hook - draw through work - thread over hook - and draw through both loops.
Double Crochet (dc) On a chain - thread over hook - put hook through the work - thread over hook - draw through work, showing 3 stitches on hook - thread over hook - draw through 2 loops - thread over hook - draw through 2 loops.

Fig. 19
Cut 14 to 18 lengths of thread (3” each) - fold them once - take new thread and make slip-knot - wind thread over center of tassel 4 times - ch 4.

FIRST ROW of top of Tassel: Ch 4 - join with a sl st.

SECOND ROW: 10 sc over ring.

THIRD ROW: 1 sc over each sc of preceding row.

Make six more rows, same as THIRD ROW. Draw chain of tassel through the crocheted top.

Fig. 20
A popcorn stitch (ppc st) consist of 6 dc all in the same place - take out hook - put hook through top st of 1st dc - draw last loop through to form a pocket.

FIRST ROW: Ch 5 - and join with a sl st.

SECOND ROW: Ch 3 - 5 dc over ring - close for a ppc st. through ch of 3 and 5 dc - ch 2 - * 1 ppc st over ring - ch 2 - repeat from *, until there are 4 ppc - and join to the ch of 3.

THIRD ROW: Ch 3 - 5 dc over ch of 2 of preceding row - close for a ppc st - ch 2 - * 1 ppc over next ch of 2 - ch 2 - repeat from * all around - and join to ch of 3.

FOURTH ROW: Ch 1 - 1 sc over ch of 2 of preceding row - * 1 sc over next ch of 2 - repeat from * all around - join to 1st sc with a sl st.

FIFTH ROW: Ch 10 for string of tassel.

Fig. 21
Make a chain 6” long - break thread - fold chain once - make with this double chain 3 knots, very loosely - put ends of chain inside of the knots - sew around this tightly and from each side with invisible stitches - crochet with same thread ch 8.

Fig. 22
FIRST ROW: Ch 3 - and join with a sl st.

SECOND ROW: 8 sc in ch of 3 - and join with a sl st.

THIRD ROW: Ch 1 - * 1 sc in 1st sc, always picking up the outside thread of loop - 2 sc over next sc - repeat from *, until the end of the row.

THE NEXT THREE ROWS: Ch 1 - 1 sc over each sc of preceding row. If a larger ball is to be made, add as many more such rows as required.

LAST ROW: Stuff ball with cotton and decrease. Ch 1 - * 1 sc over 1st sc - 1 sc over next sc - skip 3d sc - repeat from *, until the end of the row. Break off thread, leaving 1/2 yd; put this 1/2 yd through sewing needle and draw the last loops together - take crochet hook, pick up a loop of last row - and make ch 10 - knot ch of 10 once - and sew ball to bag.

Fig. 23
Over cardboard, 4” wide - wind thread about 100 times - cut thread at one end and wind a thread over what is now the center, tightly 3 times, leaving thread sufficiently long to pass through a needle, and sew to bag afterwards.

About 1/2” below this thread, wind over tassel another thread 10 times, tightly and evenly, which completes the top of the tassel; fasten this thread by passing it up and down in center of parts just wound.

Make chain about 3/4 yd long - make simple knots in chain, about 2” apart - sew to bottom of wound part, making loops to the length of the tassel - this will give 4 loops of the chain.

Fig. 24
Over cardboard, 3” wide - wind thread about 60 times - cut threads at one end and wind a thread over what is now the center, tightly 3 times - leave thread sufficiently long to make ch 4 afterwards and to sew to bag.

About 1/2” below this thread, wind over tassel another thread several times, which makes the neck of tassel - fasten this thread at inside of neck.

For cord over neck of tassel, make the following about 1” long:
Ch 2 - 1 sc in 1st ch - * 1 sc in left outside loop of preceding sc - repeat from * until the desired length is reached. Sew tightly around tassel.
