Q: What is a ribbon loudspeaker ?
A ribbon loudspeaker suspends a thin metal strip between two
magnetic plates. The audio signal is sent to the metal strip and
the strip is then alternately attracted or repelled from the
permanent magnetic plates. The movement of the metal strip creates
a sound wave which you can then hear. Some ribbon loudspeakers
only use only one magnetic plate. However, the lowest distortion
and highest efficiency is attained with two plates (referred to a "push-pull" design) as in the
Davidson ribbon. The magnetic field can be made extremely powerful,
controlling the movement of the metal "ribbon" with perfect
precision.
