icons
Many centuries ago in Thessaloniki (a key town of the Byzantine Empire) craftsmen of that area created what is known as the Macedonian School of Byzantine Painting.
Nowadays, because it is so hard to find the beautiful things of the past and because we believe that an exact copy binds 'yesterday' with 'today' thus continuing tradition, we have worked on portable Byzantine icons with aspiration and youthful enthusiam and have been offering them to the general public of both our country and abroad.
Thirty different material are utilized in the execution of our icons. Among them natural and terrene dyes worked with the yolk eggs and vinegar (the traditional technique of egg tempera), over a precious background made of gold leaves, old hewn boards, animals glues and old time varnishes, metals like copper and silver, while 10 dinstinct aging materials form the antiquity coating of our icons which lends them the feel of a genuine old Byzantine icon.
Our subjects cover selectively a long period, from the 12th to the 19th century, and they are taken from original icons found in Museums, Monasteries and churches of that time, as well as in private collections in our country and abroad.
Our ambitions lie in the detailed examination of Cristian Byzantine Art through portable icons, and the presentation, both in our country and abroad, of copies which, having not lost their liturgical (worshipping) function, are no less decorative artifacts full of aesthetic and technical integrity.
