Killer Resume Email Virus
|
This is not a hoax, but it's
also nothing really new.
In the wake of the Love Letter Email Worm (AKA IloveYou virus), the so-called 'Killer Resume' virus has gotten a lot of media exposure and some anti-virus companies are busy getting free publicity by virtue of this 'new' threat. There is really not much new here. This is one of many (over 30) variants of the the Melissa Email Virus that was reported in early 1999. The Real Scoop on the So-called Killer Resume Email Virus This version of the the Melissa Email Virus, (called by 'Killer Resume' in all the press releases) appears in your MS Outlook mailbox as a resume from a job hunter. The subject is: 'Resume -- Janet Simons.' . The attachment will contain a .doc file (MS Word document) typically called explorer.doc or resume.doc (you can't depend upon the name of this file). If you make the mistake of clicking on this file and you have MS Word set as the application to handling opening .doc files (we suggest changing this to use a Word viewing program instead of MS Word itself), the macros in the .doc file will be executed. These macros will email the virus to people in your address book and delete files from your disk. Unlike LoveLetter (IloveYou), this virus does not require Windows scripting host (WSH) be installed on your PC in order for it to spread. Protection against 'Killer Resume Never open any executable attachments unless you have specifically requested the file sent to you. This applies in particular to any MicroSoft Office related files plus any script files (e.g., *.VBS, *.HTM, *.JS?) |
