What is Language Companion?

Language Companionis a program, that will enable you to learn  the essentials of a language very quickly. The vocabulary is similar to the one you would expect in the appendix of a good travelguide. However, Language Companion will enable you to really learn these words and phrases in a comfortable and easy way. Instead of knowing, "on which page of your travel guide" the word is, that you desperately need, you will easily recall the respective vocabulary, when you need it. Language Companion will not enable you to speak all of the supported languages fluently, but it can enable you to communicate on a basic level. After a few sessions you will be able to ask for the price of an item in a shop, to ask for the right connection to your next destination, or just to order a beer in a bar.

Who can use Language Companion?

Those that spend a holiday in a foreign country, can get prepared with Language Companion, in order to understand and to be understood. Those, who are often on business trips to different countries, can quickly learn the essential vocabulary of the country they are heading to, even by running Language Companion on their laptop while in the aircraft. Those that are just curious about foreign languages can get an idea of their structures as well of the relations between them.

Which languages can you learn?

LanguageCompanion supports twelve European languages, in particular:
 
Danish Italian
Finnish Polish
French Portuguese
German Russian
Hungarian Spanish
Icelandic Swedish
 

Which features does it have?

 
Order in which the words appear:
  • sequentially (same orderas in the dictionary)
  • shuffled (the given wordsequence is randomly shuffled)
  • random (completely randomized wordorder)
     
    Furthermore you can choose, whetheryou want to see the English word first and with the next mouseclickthe word in the language you want to learn, or vice versa.
 Exam mode:
    You can test and control your learningprogress when you enable the exam mode. In exam mode you have to confirmfor each word, whether you guessed it correctly or not. The program calculatesan error count for each word, that reflects how often you knew aword. You can select by this error count and so choose those words, youhave problems with.
Selection:
    You can select words by sections(Basic Words, Directions, Numbers, Places, Shopping, Times and Travel)as well as by Error Level, which is an indicator for how often youdid not  guess a word correctly.
 Dictionary:
    The vocabulary of a language is diplayedin a list. When you select a word in the list, the word and its translationare also displayed in the vocabulary panes in a large font. Youcan search for an English word to get a translation, or for a wordof the language you want to learn, to get the English expression.
Language info:
    Gives information on how to pronounce words of the language you want to learn.
