It is in fact Istrian clay, enriched with saline water - brine (acquaMAR), of a doughy, naturally soft structure and of blackish colour. It absorbs exceptionally high concentrations of salt out of the brine. In therapeutic treatments the warming effect is mostly taken advantage of. Besides being used to cover the affected areas, fangoMAR salt mud is widely used in medicinal cosmetics (face masks, peeling, anticelulite tratments ...).
The analyses of salt mud, carried out by the Institute for Balneology in Munich in 1990, define the salt mud as a pasty, homogene substance, of very fine consistency and superfluous particles; its pH is 6,9. Its normal consistency shows 41,86% of water; the particles with a diameter of 0,02 mm, measured with the gravitation method after Atteberg, show 58,14% of the total quantity of mud, thus fulfilling the international norms for curative mud. The denser and pulpier the mud packs, the greater will be their therapeutic effect.
The analysis of the salt mud (The Institute for Balneology of Munich, 1990): |
sodium (Na) | 37,00 g/1000 g | potassium (K) | 2,90 g/1000 g | chlorine (Cl) | 80,00 g/1000 g |
magnesium (Mg) | 10,50 g/1000 g | calcium (Ca) | 4,53 g/1000 g | sulphate (SO4) | 26,00 g/1000 g |
HCO3 | 0,73 g/1000 g | iron (Fe) | 8,40 g/1000 g |

The fangoMAR salt mud packs are used in two ways. Cold mud packs are applied as an immediate remedy above all to sprained joints and lesions. Warm mud packs are, nevertheless, more often applied to the affected parts of the body. The mud is evenly heated (35 - 50ºC) and spread on the affected area. This is then covered with a nylon foil and a warm blanket in order to retain its warmth and thus its healing effect the longest possible. It has to be washed off after 20 to 30 minutes. The therapeutic effects of the mud depend greatly on the disease and its stage; nevertheless, a treatment of 6 to 10 days is strongly advised.
Indications |
The acquaMAR - brine or acqua madre (mother liquor) is a natural side product obtained through the process of sea salt production. Conducted through a system of salt pans, the sea water crystallizes into salt in the last few water pools. When the crystallized salt is removed, a dense concentrated fluid remains - brine, which contains high concentrations of iodine, bromine, magnesium, sulphur and other chemical elements. This is why the Portoroz brine was named "salty bromic-iodic water of Portoroz". Through its dense chemical contents, the brine enriches also the clay (fangoMAR) forming the bottom of the pool. The acquaMAR brine is even today obtained the traditional way only, which is, considered from the medical aspect, of great importance as it contains no irritant mineral oils and thus needs no filtering or cleansing, and so retains an unchanged chemical effect.

Indications and administration |
For a bath: empty approximately 1-2 dl into the bath tub, add sufficiently warm water
(brine bubbling bath) and bathe for 15 - 20 minutes. It helps cure posttraumatic and
postoperative conditions, disturbances in blood circulation, skin complaints (psoriasys) and psycho neuroses.
For inhalations: inhale undiluted heated brine. It cures infections of the sinuses and
throat, chronical bronchitis and smokers conditions.
The Adriatic Sea is, comparatively speaking, very salty, but in the Bay of Portoroz, its concentration is even greater due to almost constantly fine local weather, a lot of sun and rare affluents of fresh water. This allows successful production of sea salt in the salt pans of Portoroz. saleMAR sea salt is obtained the traditional way and is in itself curative. Besides NaCl it contains also magnesium, kalium, bromine and iodine.
Enriched with essential oils gives you, in the intimacy of your own bath, the possibility to experience the soothing, comforting relief of tension, muscular pain, and tired, aching feet.
