Einar Englund

Finnish composer Einar Englund was a very prominent symphonist in the years following Jean Sibelius in the 1920s. In fact he was the first major Finnish composer whose style didn’t sound like Sibelius. Englund became popular shortly after the Second World War establishing the beginning of twentieth century Finnish music.

Englund was not only a composer, but a pianist and teacher. He was born 17 June 1916, in Ljugarn, Gotland, Sweden. He married, in 1941, Meri Mirjam Gyllenbögel who died in 1956. They had one son, and two daughters. His second marriage was in 1958 to Maynie Sirén, née Smolander. Together they had 1 son.

Englund died in Gotland, 27 June 1999.
