Ruth Welting, a coloratura soprano who sang more than 50 performances with the Metropolitan Opera, died Dec. 16 in Asheville, N.C. She was 51.

Welting made her Met debut March 20, 1976, as Zerbinetta in Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos,” the same role in which she made her Covent Garden Opera debut a year before. Her last performance at the Met was Nov. 20, 1993, as the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.”

Welting was born May 1, 1948, in Memphis. She studied voice in New York, Rome and Paris. Her debut at the New York City Opera was in 1971, as Blonde in Mozart’s “The Abduction from the Seraglio.”

Welting also sang Gilda in “Rigoletto,” the title role of “Lucia di Lammermoor,” Marie in “The Daughter of the Regiment” and Susanna in “The Marriage of Figaro.”

Two of her most acclaimed recordings were as the Fairy Godmother in “Cinderella” and Philine in “Mignon.”

From 1994 to 1998, she studied government at Syracuse University in New York, preparing herself for government service. After graduation in 1998, she entered the Maxwell School of Government at Syracuse.
