Ahhh, Mudhoney. The band that would never sell out. The band that gleaned its name from a Russ Meyer titty epic. It's hard to believe, despite the in-and-out-of-grace of anything even remotely from the Northwest and the disintegration of most of their more well-known peers, that these guys are not only still kicking around (with their original lineup, no less), but also still putting out records (on a big label, no less). Hell, these guys have been around for so long and put out so much quality music that they're almost candidates for an installment of Forgotten Favorites.
Tomorrow Hit Today, sadly, inspires not much more than a grunt and a yawn. Yeah, it's got its moments - "Oblivion" is a keeper, if only for its line "She sang the shit out of ‘Dancing Queen'" - but those moments are few and far between. Mark Arm has somehow morphed into Rollins Lite (witness the repetition-into-submission vocal style on the aforementioned "Oblivion", "Try To Be Kind" and "I Have To Laugh"), while the rest of the band (guitarist Steve Turner, bassist Matt Lukin, drummer Dan Peters - hey, he was in Nirvana one night!) continue to pump out the same tired mediocre sludge they've been creating for the latter part of this decade (save for My Brother The Cow, of course).
Bless their hearts, they're probably going to get dropped (if they haven't already - ye olde axe is falling quickly on much less deserving bands thanks to the recent restructuring of some of the big labels), and where do they go from here? Where can they go from here? Oblivion calls, but thank God for my copy of Superfuzz Bigmuff.
