This is the first solo release from Gillard, the veteran singer/guitarist of Cleveland outfits Death Of Samantha, Cobra Verde and Gem, and current sideman with Guided by Voices. Gillard's work with GbV on the Mag Earwhig! LP and live over the last two years has revealed a strong pop sensibility, suggesting that he has more to bring to the table than flashy licks and a predilection for snazzy leopard-print stage clothing. Malamute Jute reveals him to be a pop/rock craftsman with a surprisingly gentle, folky bent.
While there is an edgy moment with the strafing upbeat riff rock of "Livery", the EP brims with well-constructed melodies and inventive, keyboard-touched textures, all played by Gillard. The title track is a wistful, acoustic-strumming slice of beat pop, while "Western World" boasts an ominous, early '80s big beat feel and a sparkling, new-wavey piano hook.
Malamute Jute makes me want to investigate Gillard's past work more thoroughly. As snug a fit as he is in GbV, it will be a shame if Gillard doesn't return for a full album of his own thing.
