PURPOSE: The purpose of the conference is to advance our understanding of the context of rural America and provide a forum for presentation of research results in Crisis Intervention, Critical Incident Stress Management and Debriefing, Disaster Mental Health Services (DMHS), advances in service delivery, discussion and sharing of information, ideas and plans, development of research and service delivery networks, and presentation of continuing education training in these areas with special consideration of rural American communities. The presentations will be included (in abstract form) in the Conference Proceedings. The best papers will be considered for a special issue of the international journal, TRAUMATOLOGY, focusing on RURAL CRISIS INTERVENTION. Presentations will be limited to 30 minutes each and should include time for questions or discussion. Papers and poster sessions are equally welcomed.

Major Theme areas will include two tracks:

D. Effects of National Crises on Rural Populations

E. Terrorism and the Rural Community

F. Effects of Cultural Diversity on Rural Environments

2. Critical Incident Stress Management and Debriefing

A. Research and Reviews of Recent Literature

B. PTSD, CISM and Debriefing

C. Follow-up Counseling/Therapy for Victims and Responders

D. Terrorism and CISM/CISD

E. CISM/CISD for families of Responders and Military

F. CISM/CISD in Natural and Man-made Disasters

PROPOSED AUDIENCE:

This is a National Level Conference and the audience will include Crisis Intervention, Critical Incident Stress Management/Debriefing, Disaster Mental Health professionals and other interested Mental Health Professionals, Researchers, and Trainers/Educators from throughout the country.

PAPER/POSTER SESSION SUBMISSION:

A cover sheet with the title of the proposed presentation, the name(s) and title(s) of presenter(s), the address, telephone number, Fax number, and email address of the contact person. Indicate whether submission is for a paper or poster session. Authors are requested to submit an abstract of 50 words or less, suitable for the program, describing the content of the session.

Papers for publication must be submitted camera-ready or in pdf format if submitted as an email attachment and must conform to the following specifications:

Times Roman, 10-point type font, single spacing with 12-point leading, single column format using 8 1/2 bt 11 inch paper with margins of one inch on the left , 3/4 inch on the right, and 3/4 inch margins on the top and bottom. References in the text should follow APA style.

The preferred method of submission is one file in pdf (Adobe) format and one file in Word format. The pdf file will facilitate printing out papers for distribution at the Conference and present a better organized copy similar to other printed journals. The Word format will permit editing if accepted for the Special Issue of the journal.

Graduate students and others who are submitting Poster Session proposals, send in pdf format for Conference approvals.

Deadline for submission of paper is January 30 or February 2, 2004.

If accepted for the Conference notification will be sent on February 16.

Those papers accepted for publication in the journal Traumatology will be notified by April 10.

When submitting papers, please indicate:

1. If you are submitting for both the Conference and for the Journal, or

2. submitting for the Conference only.
