The Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM): Advanced Group Crisis Intervention training program has been designed to provide the experienced provider with the latest information on critical incident stress management techniques and post-trauma syndromes. The program emphasizes a broadened knowledge base concerning critical incident stress interventions established in the Basic program. Special emphasis is placed on troubleshooting difficult and complex situations. This training meets the requirements of the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation. Basic CISM training is a prerequisite for all participants.
Course topics include:
Crisis intervention concepts
Critical incident stress debriefing
Mechanisms of action in CISM
Research and outcome findings
Post traumatic stress syndromes
Troubleshooting common problems
Dealing with difficult debriefings and defusings
Mass casualty or disaster application
CISM and children
The suicide debriefing
Grief and loss
Application exercises
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
Discuss key crisis intervention concepts.
Participate in a CISM simulation and comment on the process.
Discuss the theoretical basis for CISM.
Discuss research evidence regarding CISM.
Discuss the pathological consequences of traumatic stress.
Identify at least 4 common problems that may be encountered when providing CISM interventions
Describe key concepts in managing difficult interventions: multiple event CISD, significantly delayed interventions, line of duty death.
Describe special considerations in crisis intervention during and following disaster situations.
Identify differences in working with children in crisis.
Describe special considerations in providing support following coworker suicide.
Contrast reactions to acutely stressful situations and grief and loss reactions.
This program is 15 contact hours.
