RECRUITMENT, SUPPORT, AND SELF-CARE ISSUES FOR RELIEF WORKERS SERVING IN MASS-CASUALTY DISASTERS

Presenter: John D. Weaver, LSW, ACSW, CBHE

Airline accidents, bombings, and other mass-casualty events often result in some of the most intense, complex, and stressful disaster relief assignments relief workers will face. Given the unique nature of mass-casualty incidents, extra time must be taken to: (1) carefully select the right group of workers; (2) prepare them for their assignments; (3) support them while they are active participants; and (4) debrief them once their relief roles end. This presentation will offer guidelines for recruitment, training, orientation ("prebriefing"), defusing, debriefing, and self-care in mass casualty assignments. Return To Conference Page
