The following are the most destructive hurricanes to hit the United States mainland this century, as ranked by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The first list ranks the 20 most deadly storms. The second ranks the 20 most costly storms, adjusted to 1996 dollars. THE DEADLIEST: 1. Unnamed - Hit Galveston, Texas in 1900 killing more than 8,000 people. 2. Unnamed - Hit Lake Okeechobee, Florida in 1928, killing 1,836 people. 3. Unnamed - Hit the Florida Keys and Texas in 1919, killing 600 people. 4. Unnamed - Hit New England in 1938, killing 600 people. 5. Unnamed - Hit the Florida Keys in 1935, killing 408 people. 6. Audrey - Hit Louisiana and Texas in 1957, killing 390 people. 7. Unnamed - Hit the northeastern United States in 1944, killing 390 people. 8. Unnamed - Hit Grand Isle, Louisiana in 1909, killing 350 people. 9. Unnamed - Hit New Orleans, Louisiana in 1915, killing 275 people. 10. Unnamed - Hit Galveston, Texas in 1915, killing 275 people. 11. Camille - Hit Mississippi and Louisiana in 1969, killing 256 people. 12. Unnamed - Hit Miami and Pensacola, Florida, Mississippi and Alabama in 1926, killing 243 people. 13. Diane - Hit the northeastern United states in 1955, killing 184 people. 14. Hugo - Hit South Carolina in 1989, causing $8.49 billion of damage. 3. Agnes - Hit the northeastern United States in 1972, causing $7.5 billion of damage. 4. Betsy - Hit Florida and Louisiana in 1965, causing $7.43 billion of damage. 5. Camille - Hit Mississippi and Alabama in 1969, causing $6.01 billion of damage. 6.
