PARENTING SKILLS

OVERVIEW OF PARENTING

George W. Doherty, M.S., LPC

A. People learn how to behave from each other Parents teach their children Children teach their parents Husbands teach their wives Wives teach their husbands ALL BEHAVIOR IS TAUGHT B. You can be a teacher also: You can change behaviors in others that need changing You can help others change your behavior You can change your child's behavior Have you ever wondered why we train people for almost every important job in society except the most important one of all? Mothers and fathers have a difficult job. However, few are trained for it with the teaching skills they need. In this course, we hope to provide you with some important teaching and management skills. Give it a try. Remember, please give some feedback either thru the guestbook or by email(highplains140@usa.net). Please also ask questions. They will be answered or you will be referred to another source where it can be answered.
LET'S GET STARTED!
WHO OWNS THE PROBLEM?

In the parent-child relationship, three situations occur: 1. The child has a problem because he/she is thwarted in satisfying a need. It is not a problem for the parent because the CHILD'S behavior in no tangible way interferes with the parent's satisfying his/her own needs. Therefore, THE CHILD OWNS THE PROBLEM. 2. The child is satisfying his/her own needs (he/she is not thwarted) and his/her behavior is not interfering with the parent's own needs. Therefore, THERE IS NO PROBLEM IN THE RELATIONSHIP. 3. The child is satisfying his/her own needs (he/she is not thwarted). But his/her behavior is a problem to the parent because it is interfering in some tangible way with the parent's satisfying a need of his/her own. NOW THE PARENT OWNS THE PROBLEM. ACTIVE LISTENING by the parent is most appropriate and helpful when the child owns the problem. However, it is often very inappropriate when the parent owns the problem. It helps the child find solutions to his/her own problems, but seldom helps the parent find solutions when the child's behavior is causing the parent a problem. 1997
