Although the inclination for mainstream America is to reach for a quick fix from prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, statistics show that natural remedies like vitamins and herbs are far safer.
The National Center for Health Statistics, American Association of Poison Control Centers, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Journal of the American Medical Association and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission have tabulated the causes and number of deaths in the United States.
If you follow the instructions on the labels, there is little chance that dietary supplements will cause you any harm. I wish we could say the same for presciption and OTC drugs.
Here are the averages of the annual mortality rates for the years 1981 to 1993:
Vitamins l
Alohol-Related Deaths 100,000
Commercial Herbs 0
Microbial Agents 90,000
Smoking 400,000
