Edward Dmytryk on 'Film Noir':

"There are people that have a penchant for this kind of categorizing; for putting names to something which are so ridiculous. I have a particular hatred for creating new vocabularies. This is what happens, after a movement has taken place, without the people involved in it even knowing that it is a movement, along come these students, the critics, who can't do the thing at all, but they become the experts on it, as it were. They write books interpreting interpreters, and they create a special vocabulary."
