Film Noir:

French term for black or dark film, attributed to film critic Nino Frank in 1946, to classify American films from the 1940's and '50's that had dark themes centering around crime, gangsters, double crosses, deceit, despair, femme fatales, and revenge. Primarily filmed in black and white with heavy use of shadows, darkness, venetian blinds and much cigarette smoke. The phrase was unrecognized by most American film industry professionals of that era. Director Edward Dmytryk, "Cornered", "Crossfire", and "Murder My Sweet", wasn't keen on the expression.
