HomePort is pleased to host and link
to material related to the families that trace ancestry to David Hunter
and Margaret Martin. David's ancestors are reputed to
have
left Hunterton, in North Aryshire, Scotland and moved to Aghadowey,
Londonderry
County, Ireland and from there Margaret and David Hunter emigrated in
1769 bound for Philadelphia. During the
voyage
their ship was wrecked on Sable Island off the coast of Nova Scotia and
they were rescued by Irish emigrant ship, The Good Ship
Blessing
and taken to Halifax. Coming into contact with Admiral
Cochrane
he encouraged them to settle in Nova Scotia.
First settling near Windsor, NS
they were
flooded
when dykes protecting their farmland broke, and thus established their
home in Ardoise, Hants
County
near the home of Ann Allen and Rev. George Gillmore who had also come
from
Northern Ireland. Eventually their son, Lodowick Hunter married
Jane
Gillmore,
the daughter of Ann and Rev. George. The family of the original
