Epworth League
Named after Epworth, England the birthplace of Methodism's founders, the brothers Charles (1707-1788) and John Wesley (1703-1791), the League existed as a Methodist youth organization to help the needy, encourage literary activities and support the development of Methodist young people.  Several active League groups existed in St. John' s Newfoundland during the late 1800's and early decades of the 1900's.

The Newfoundland Encyclopedia indicates:
Epworth League
Methodist youth society established in St. John's West, February 1890. The first officers were Mrs. George Bond, President, Mrs. Milley and Mrs. C.R. Steer. The second
Newfoundland chapter was formed at Brigus in April 1890. The Epworth League was officially inaugurated on May 17, 1889 at the Central Methodist Episcopal Church, Ohio. The organization was a result of the union of the Young Peoples' Methodist Alliance, the Oxford League, the Young Peoples Methodist Episcopal Alliance, the Young Peoples' Christian League and the Methodist Young Peoples' Union. The newly formed league took its name from the birthplace of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, and adopted the motto Look Up, Lift Up. In Newfoundland congregations, the League was responsible for
practical work by young people of the church along the line of Christian endeavour, relief of distress, visitations of the sick and literary culture (Cochrane Street Methodist Church: 1905). The organization decreased in importance after the Methodist Congregation in Newfoundland joined the United Church of Canada in 1925, and was eventually replaced by the Young Peoples' Union and other youth groups.
