Royal Artillery uniforms evolved over time and those changes were recorded through military order books, paintings and descriptions. Paintings by Edward Dawes, show an officer on the left and a gunner on the right, the gunner is standing at "the Present" and records the Royal Artillery uniforms in use in 1792.
Uniform regulations saw minor modifications in 1796, 1797, 1798 and 1799.  Paintings by R.T. MacDonald show a gunner in 1797.

A second painting by R.T. MacDonald shows a Royal Artillery gunner on the right,  and an officer on the left in 1799.
