Carbonear, Newfoundland was the gathering place in 1999 of about 125 descendants, friends and families of Mary Willis (1747-1832) & John Bemister (1749-1838) whose sons were early Carbonear settlers who had come from Corfe Mullen, England.

Mary and John were married at Wimborne Minster, Dorset, England on May 30, 1875 and had 79 grandchildren, and hundreds of descendants now living throughout North America.

Organized with lots of opportunities to meet distant relatives through workshops, tours, boat rides and walks as well as legendary Newfoundland food and hospitality. The weekend was filled with occasions to discover ancestral roots, to make new friends and to discover Carbonear.
Rich in history,  both family and Newfoundland,  the communities of Conception and Trinity bays provided an ideal setting for relatives with deep, but often unknown roots, to rediscover their ancestors through the combined efforts of historical researchers and gifted storytellers.

Evenings of feasting and dancing saw all ages from fourteen to seventy-six on the dance floor - and the storytelling never stopped.  Church services, sailing excursions and quiet walks helped to bring a deeper appreciation for a family shaped by the sea, commerce and politics much like Newfoundland itself. A family  with both Catholic and Protestant roots it again is a reflection of Newfoundland in general.
The images from the weekend, bring back great memories - of the people met, a wonderful time and of discovery.  Overall, a grand weekend of real Newfoundland fun.
