When Mattie and Dill posed for their wedding portrait in 1889 they were
were likely preparing for a long and happy marriage. Mattie's death
four lears later would leave Dill with a young daughter Jessie to care
for. It would be Dill's, Nova Scotia relatives, a continent away
who would take care of Jessie until Dill was able to care for her following
his marriage to Frances Peters two years later. Like one of the maiden
aunts in Nova Scotia who cared for her and introduced her to books, Jessie
would become a teacher.
