James Sterling Scott
was born in Nova Scotia in May 19, 1833 and immigrated, as a teenage to
Boston along with the majority of his family in the late 1840's.
Working in the family carriage factory in Boston, stitching leather by
hand his health began to suffer. After ten years work amid the industrial
conditions of the carriage building trade, he chose to move to Illinois
at the age of 24. There he met Henrietta Sutton a student at Major College
and married her in Normal on August 23, 1860. Henrietta Sutton was
born on August 4, 1842. Henrietta taught school and the family farmed
in Cooksville, Illinois. Together they had a family of seven children.
All four original images are part of the family collection of Walter D.
Scott, a great grandson of Henrietta and James Sterling Scott currently
living in Northfield, Illinois. The images are contained in an album
and have been identified by direct descendants.
