IDEAS: THE BACTERIA REVOLUTION
Friday, May 28 & June 4, 1999
CBC Radio One, 9:05 pm
TEXT-ONLY SUMMARY

Part One of The Bacteria Revolution (aired Friday, May 28, 1999) begins at the 12th International Conference on Lyme Disease and Other Spirochetal and Tick-Borne Disorders in New York City, where about 350 people have gathered to review the latest information about Lyme and other tick-borne diseases.

Part Two of The Bacteria Revolution (aired Friday, June 4, 1999) explores some of these new tools with the scientists who are using them, including David Relman. Relman, who teaches medicine and microbiology at Stanford University, notes that the ability to grow micro-organisms in a laboratory culture has up until recently been the only way to definitively identify them. This is because many germs look alike under the microscope, and it’s only when you can grow enough of them to observe their behaviour in culture that it’s possible to distinguish similar-looking bugs from each other.
