"Rommel" "April 1, 1986 - March 13, 1998"

This is an ongoing story about Cody, Anna and my wonderful grandson, Jacob.

First, let me tell you how Cody came to life and became one of my "children". I do not use this term loosely! Cody's mother was a Rottweiler who fell in love with a Golden Retriever. The golden, named Rusty, became Cody's father. Cody's mother was not very maternal. She gave birth to four puppies, two of which died (I think they were too early). This left a little boy and a little girl. Cody, of course, being the boy. His mother decided that after a week, she had had enough of this little fellow and would just take care of the little girl. I took on the job of raising this little fellow and I raised him just like I raised my own human children. He took the bottle with vigor and I had to massage his tummy with a warm soft towel to stimulate his urination and bowel movements. It is a good thing someone developed formula for puppies. I received Cody's sister a week later, so I was pretty busy with these two little darlin's. I wish they had puppy diapers!

Cody's sister was adopted by a very nice girl and I kept Cody. He is black and where the tan marking are supposed to be on a Rottweiler, his markings are brindled. He is very large, a good 28" or more at the shoulder and weighs between 125 and 130. (I think) His head is large but similar to a Golden's as well as his eyes and facial features, only larger. However, Cody thinks he is a toy poodle (we raised him for a while with poodles). Until the age of 5 months, he would get on my lap, grab my hand with his paws and suck my thumb. This hurts the bottom part of the thumb since the teeth are well developed by this time.

Cody minds very well, except when people come to visit. He is the only fellow I have trained that let's his excitement overwhelm him to such a state of nuttiness that he cannot stand himself. Neither can anyone else at first, but he eventually settles down after he picks up his bunny and circles through the dining room and kitchen about 30 or 40 times. He absolutely loves people so very much. My neighbor tells everyone he comes to see Cody to get "slimed". People are taken back with him at first, that is until he runs from the front door to fetch his bunny to show these new "pet me" prospects and stands at the door looking at them with this stuffed animal hanging from his mouth and wiggling all over. People just don't know what to think and believe that I am lying to them when I say he is "friendly". If you just touch Cody, he settles down. The only problem with this is that you will have to sit with you hand on him if you want him to stay settled down. This is just with people visiting, he is usually calm around me and is now laying beside me while I type this. When Anna is in, she lays in the hall or by the door in her guard mode.

Cody inherited the Golden's instincts of retrieving. He has a "soft mouth" and is very gentle about taking food or anything else from your hand. He also watches your eyes all of the time. When my grandson, Jacob, visits I have to put Cody in his cage to settle down, however, when Cody gets near Jacob, he tries to crouch down and is very easy with Jacob. I think Cody tries to make himself smaller than Jacob. It is really a site to watch. One afternoon I was babysitting Jacob and he decided he would not eat dinner, so Cody sat next to him and I pretended Jacob was a dog and feed a little to Cody and a little to Jacob. Jacob sat like a dog on the floor next to Cody and I guess I am glad nobody was witnessing this spectacle!

Cody does not ride well in the car. This is the same as having people over to the house, he can't stand himself and has and extreme amount of energy. My baby girl Rottie, Anna, rides wonderfully in the car, you don't even know that she is there. However, Anna is extremely protective of me and I would pity a carjacker. Cody would welcome a carjacker in with great enthusiasm and this would have a similar effect on the ol' heart of anyone. I just wonder if Cody would be considered a geek around his peers.

Anna does not like Cody at all, but she does not like any dog and would happily try to maim and do away with them. I have to keep these two separated. It is worse than jealous children. It just wears me out rotating them without getting them together. Anna is also an eating machine. She is highly food driven. Anna is also very calm and likes here rear end scratched - forever!

Thank you for visiting,
