Stuart Little is a delightful story that both children and adults have enjoyed for over 50 years. It was the first children's book written by E.B. White and it has an interesting beginning.
Stuart came to E.B. White in a dream. The year was 1926. White had fallen asleep on a train headed to New York. While sleeping, he dreamed of the mouse-like boy who walked briskly with a cane.
Stuart was a convenient character for White, who liked to tell stories to his nephews and nieces. Years before he decided to write a children's book, White entertained his young relatives with adventures about Stuart.
White considered different surnames for Stuart before settling on "Little." Two names he thought about were "Stuart Ade" and "Stuart Ames."
Garth Williams illustrated the book with almost 90 drawings. He also illustrated Charlotte's Web, White's second children's book.
