In The Buffs
December 12, 2001

My, aren't we being sentimental tonight? Or you were were laying on the sugar so your personal clipping service would answer the call?

Call me a sucker. Here goes:

Colorado (10-2) plays the Oregon Ducks (10-1) in the Fiesta Bowl, 4:30 p.m. Eastern, 3:30 p.m. Central and on the previous Monday in Australia. The game airs on ABC, which in Lexington is my station which means I don't have to do a 6 o'clock sports that day, whatever day it is.

Yay!!!

Colorado lost out by fractions of a point to Nebraska -- yes, even though the Buffs blasted Nebraska by 26 points -- in the Bowl Championship Series rankings so it's the Huskers who will play Miami in the Rose Bowl for what's supposed to be the national championship.

However, should Nebraska beat Miami, the winner of the CU/OU game would lay legitimate claim to the title. If Miami wins, the Hurricanes are undisputed champs because they will finish as the only undefeated team in Division One-A.

Now for your Broncos. Quarterback Brian Griese left Sunday's victory over Seattle Sunday with a concussion and the Broncs don't know if they can unscarbmle his bairn in time for him to play this week. "It is your brain," said Griese. "You only have one of them."

Hold on a sec while I write that gem down.

Still there? OK, I'm back. The Broncos are 7-6 and have little hope of catching the Oakland Raiders (9-3) for the AFC West division title even if their quarterback can remain conscious for the rest of the season but they could still qualify for the playoffs as a wildcard.

They would be doing better if not for all of the same "Mexican pieces of (bleep)" that are haunting Dan Issel's dreams right now.

As I said on our 11 p.m. news tonight after replaying the clip of Issel's outburst:

"Not to excuse him, but you feel bad enough after your team has just lost its fifth game in a row, like the Nuggets had, then some drunk wants to give you more grief about it and your brain can overheat a little bit. Now he's got four games to cool off."

Not as good as Brian Griese's quote, perhaps, but how many people do you know who will quote themselves off the television in an e-mail?
