Late Nights
November 12, 1999

This note comes to you from the one bedroom mansion on Duke Road. I finally got the home computer Internet connected.

www.altavista.com (the popular search engine) offers free Internet access. The drawback is an ad banner that takes up about 1/8th of the screen. But, hey, if you want free TV you have to watch commercials, right?

Of course, as soon as I can get on line at home, we get new computers at work that can all get there with super fast connections. We've all discovered web sites that have those MP3 music files and how to download and play them on the computer. I hope I'm not the only one who will discover how annoying they are to the person next to you trying to work.

It's late night on a Friday here. I wish I could tell you that we all decided to stage a "Let's write Alison a letter" party but I'm afraid it's just me here.

Well, Annie's here but she claims not to remember you. I told her, "I suppose not. You were hiding under the bed. It's hard to meet people that way."

"If I wanted to meet people," she said, "I wouldn't run off and hide in the first place."

Meanwhile, I find that I've interrupted writing you so I could argue with my cat. I think I've recounted my end of the conversation accurately and I tried to get Annie's part right because you know there's nothing worse than incurring the wrath of a misquoted cat.

So, yeah, no late night tonight. Those of us who weren't feeling poorly to start with saw the pictures that came back from last week's festivities and were inspired not to repeat the feat. You will still have to ask someone else about the wrestling.

Maryland can be pricey, especially in and around Baltimore. My experience has been that the farther north you go, the more expensive it gets to live. Connecticut was just awful and Boston is consistently ranked as one of the most expensive cities in the country for cost of living.

How's work? It's good to hear you're getting out with your colleagues. It can be harder in larger markets because people tend to be older and have families to occupy their after hours. I like hanging out with the people from work but I would like to make friends outside the circle of people from the station.

I'll ring off now but I'm glad you enjoy our correspondence. Writing letters is almost as much fun as reading replies.

John
