Ogun - War - Ironwork
As with most of the Saints, Ogun presents paradox and seeming dichotomy. Archetype
of both the neanderthal power trip thug as well as the severe, disciplined
blacksmith creating precision tools with years (ages?) of practice to guide his
hand. He is both the beligerent soldier and the wise healer of the woods who communes
with his herbs and medicines in solitude. In the Haitian tradition (often spelled
Ogoun) he is sometimes known by the colors of red and black. it was under his flag
that the escaped slaves (Maroons) created the Petro rites - a key element in the
success of the Haitian Revolution that overthrew the white, colonial oppressors
occupying the country early in the ninteenth century.
