SAG HARBOR, Long Island, New York - A cruising guide
t/t The Voyage of Snow Goose - sailing website
The rattling of the anchor chain as it is lowered from the bow creates an inviting and familiar sound that has echoed through this harbor for over three hundred years.
Sag Harbor abounds with history and nostalgia. From the days of the old whaling ships to the present, it has been a melting pot of history, art, and culture. The diversity of social backgrounds is still present today. From artists and writers to the "jet set" and celebrities, this quaint old village attracts all. It is located in the heart of "The Hamptons", but has attained a unique charm and character all its own. The village is a perfect stop for boaters seeking a safe and secure harbor with all amenities available. It is a popular port of call for many luxury yachts as well as weekend cruisers. Dock space and moorings are available through the Village Harbormaster who can be contacted on the VHF radio. There are several private marinas offering dockage, as well as boatyards for hauling and repairs. If mooring or anchoring, a water taxi service provides easy access to and from the many amenities that lay ashore. From movies and theater, to shopping and dining, Sag Harbor offers something for everyone. The anchorage's close proximity to the village makes it convenient for provisioning, and the local hardware store has a large stock of marine supplies. Public transportation, taxi, or limousines are available if wishing to experience more of "The Hamptons". Perhaps an excursion to one of the world famous ocean beaches, shopping in the neighboring villages, or possibly a wine tasting tour of one of the local vineyards. A bike rental might be nice for a casual ride down the narrow shady streets, lined with many old and historical houses. More information is available at the local Chamber of Commerce, which is located in the windmill at the foot of the "long wharf". But if you're looking for a pristine deserted beach to anchor off, the area between the north and south forks of Long Island offers a multitude of possibilities. Several miles to the west of Sag Harbor lies Noyac Bay. Here you can anchor off a mile long sandy beach, or adjacent to the "Morton Wildlife Sanctuary", a pristine nature reserve which remains today as it was when the famed pirate "Billy the Kid" cruised these very waters, searching for a secure place to hide his stolen treasure. Legend has it that Gardiner's Island was his choice, but the mystery still remains. Sag Harbor truly offers a multitude of options with unparalleled convenience for the boater. Whether for a brief layover or an extended vacation, more than likely the most difficult part of your stay here will be hauling in the anchor or letting go the dock lines, because you will probably wish you could stay just a bit longer. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~o--) GETTING AROUND S.O.S.
