These are the most southernmost islands in the Caribbean, only 10km (seven miles) off the Venezuelan coast. The two islands are 33km (21 miles) apart. Trinidad is half forested, with a mountain range running along the north coast. There is a flat central plain, and rolling hills in the south. Tobago also has a central spine of hills with a flatter area to the south. The national capital is Port of Spain (pop. 350,000); Tobago's capital is Scarborough. Other major urban areas in Trinidad include San Fernando in the south, Chaguanas (central), and Arima in the east.



There are about 1.3 million people in Trinidad and Tobago, with roots in many parts of the world: Africa, India, Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle East and China. Tobago's population is mainly of African descent. About 29% of the population is Roman Catholic, 24% is Hindu, 11% is Anglican and 6% is Muslim. English is the spoken language.



The Trinidad and Tobago dollar floats against other currencies, and daily rates are carried in the local newspapers (see links) Trinidad is one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time and four hours behind Greenwich Mean Time year round. Average temperature is 29 degrees celcius (83 degrees farenheit). June to December is the rainy season, with rainfall mainly in short, sharp bursts. Tobago is slightly cooler and less humid than Trinidad.



Trinidad and Tobago became independent from Britain is 1962 and has a fully democratic government, elections have been held peacefully and regularly since 1956. Trinidad and Tobago is a republic within the Commonwealth, with a President as Head of State. Executive power lies with the Prime Minister and the Cabinet. The legislature consists of an elected House of Representatives and an appointed Senate. Tobago has a separate House of Assembly controlling some of the island's domestic affairs.
