Our Background - Building Experience and Efficiency

Jeremy Trotman and Associates (JTA) was started in 1988 when Jeremy Trotman left the Australian Chamber of Manufactures (ACM) to commence private practice. Starting with two consultants and support staff, the company's approach and services offered reflected those developed by Jeremy in over ten years spent in OHS with Industry and the ACM. The focus remained the same - objective assessment of risks and development of practical solutions. This focus was sharpened with the challenge of developing services for the small business sector; comprising 85 percent of ACM members.

Ten years on, JTA is a bit bigger, but retains the same approach to the business - lean and flexible; no commitment to standard "packages" of services, we believe that better ways of achieving the same result can always be found.

Services - Recent Projects - Some Examples

Getting the job done within challenging time and cost constraints requires lateral thinking and a preparedness to push the limits of current practice.

JTA has been developing and implementing practical systems to control OHS risks since 1988. We are always looking for ways of working smarter in OHS&E and returning a real benefit to our client.

Some examples of recent projects include:

ASBESTOS IDENTIFICATION AND ASSESSMENT DEALT WITH ON NATIONAL BASIS

Over 3000 asbestos audits conducted in Victoria, NSW, NT, WA, Tasmania and Queensland in retail establishments, manufacturing plants, municipal buildings, warehouses, etc. Preparation of corporate procedures and policies for risk assessment and control (including removal). Removal specification and supervision for specific jobs. Staff and employee briefing and training.

Compliance with differing State legal requirements. Introduction of computerised, corporate management information system. Cost effective allocation of limited resources for removal etc.

CONFLICTING REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS SORTED OUT

Review of asbestos legislation across Australia conducted for several large national retail organisations. Review of labelling requirements for asbestos containing materials throughout Australia.

Development of consistent corporate policies which work across the different State boundaries.

VOLATILE STORAGE SITUATION - SAFETY AND REGULATORY COMPLIANCE

Survey and audit of large electrical manufacturing plant for hazardous substances. Development of computer database for recording, interrogating and processing key information including calculation of assessment factors as per regulation requirements, assessment of changes to storage volumes and classifications and individual inquiries.

System enables identification of location and nature of hazardous materials, preparation of management plans and quick and easy assessment of the implications of changes to storage etc.

RESCUE OF SMALL BUSINESS AT SEA IN DANGEROUS GOODS RED TAPE

Development of Manifests, Site Plans, Emergency Procedures and related documentation for submission to the Occupational Health and Safety Authority under Dangerous Goods Storage and Handling Regs. Coordination of Fire Protection Inspections and Plant and Equipment and Depot design specifications with relevant Safety and Environmental authorities.

All requirements of Dangerous Goods (Storage and Handling) Regulations met by small business. Saving in management time (and stress) and major saving on long term costs of building modifications.

Development of design specifications for equipment, ventilation and storage facilities in Australian division of Japanese company to meet Dangerous Goods (Storage and Handling) Regs and Environmental Standards.

Compliance with Victorian Regs, improved storage and handling facilities. Japanese parent is considering similar design.

ASBESTOS - SKILLING OF INTERNAL RESOURCES

Devising innovative system for ensuring compliance with Asbestos Regs - training managers and supervisors to carry out consultation, risk assessments and to fulfil reporting and recording requirements (rather than simply conducting a chain of audits).

Saving of about two thousand dollars per location on audits plus more efficient handling of ongoing asbestos related issues due to increased internal skills and knowledge.

PRACTICAL, INDUSTRY SPECIFIC PROCEDURES PASS THE MARKET TEST

Producing a manual for Victorian Golf Courses covering the assessment and control of hazardous chemicals such as pesticides, flammables, etc.

Compliance with the law. Commercial publication of the manual to recoup consulting costs.

Producing a comprehensive set of hazard management guides for a major public utility to assist supervisors and managers dealing with a wide range of Hazardous Chemicals and other OHS&E issues.

Pushing responsibility for OHS out to line management who then draw on OHS experts as required. Commercial sale of manual by client.

IMPROVING SAFETY AND INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS

Assessment of manual handling tasks involved in unloading kiln cars in the ceramics industry.

Settlement to industrial dispute, compliance with Manual Handling Regs, improved safety and efficiency.

REDUCING STRESS AND CLAIMS COSTS

Provision of stress management programs for major accounting and confectionary manufacturers.

Reduced stress claims (major compensation cost).

COMPREHENSIVE OHS&E PROGRAMME

Occupational health and safety and environment audit for engineering company, review of policies and procedures, completion of OHS&E manual to QA format.

Compliance with OHS and Environment Acts and Regs with minimal increase in bureaucracy. Subsequent visits by inspectors have unearthed no significant OHS&E issues.

MAKING TECHNOLOGY FIT AUSTRALIAN WORKPLACE

Redesign of an imported production line in the food industry to reduce the incidence of occupational overuse syndrome (formerly RSI) and improve comfort and efficiency of operators.

Improved comfort and productivity. Solution to industrial problems and potential claims.

INDUSTRY SPECIFIC TRAINING TO MEET REGULATORY STANDARDS

Development and provision of a training program and advice for golf clubs on dangerous goods and general chemical safety.

Compliance with regs. Improved occupational and environmental safety.

Project management of development of hazardous chemicals training for major paper manufacturers training unit.

Skilling internal training team to present training. Major cost saving.

CLAIMS REVIEW SAVES $150,000

Review of WorkCover claims management for engineering company.

Saving of over $150,000 over three years.

NOISE MEASUREMENT, ASSESSMENT AND CONTROL

Dosimetry, noise surveys and a noise plan for a major soap manufacturer and regional shire councils and audiometry for a shoe manufacturer.

Compliance with Noise Regs. Reduced potential for Hearing Damage.

POLYCHLORINATED BIPHENYLS - INSIDIOUS ISSUE RESOLVED

Audit of PCB's throughout Australia in distribution centres of a major retail chain. System of management developed to meet Australian and New Zealand Management Plan.

Audits and Management System permit control of occupational and environmental risk associated with PCB's without increasing asset maintenance costs significantly

AEROSOL MEASUREMENT AND CONTROL

Comprehensive continuous monitoring programme carried out at a major automotive manufacturing plant for aerosol. Programme included personal static and continuous real time monitoring to assess the effectiveness of air cleaning equipment.

Internal aerosol emissions and trends quantified for a cross section of operating conditions. Objective measurement of pollution control equipment performance acceptable to employees and authorities.

ASBESTOS, hazardous substances AND PCBs COMBINED

Audit of workplaces across different states for National organisation covering hazardous substances, PCBs in particular and asbestos. Development of a computerised database for recording the information and which allows searching across all parameters gathered, building location, type, area, etc.

Compliance with regulations and National Standards in different states achieved in one survey and with one report. Practical recommendations detail cost effective procedures for compliance. Data base allows easy access to information.

Professional Staff

All work conducted by JTA is done directly by, or under the direct supervision of a professionally qualified Occupational Hygienist. Our Hygienists hold membership of the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists together with certification in comprehensive practice by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene. Consultants also hold post graduate qualifications in ergonomics and membership of the Ergonomics Society of Australia and the Safety Institute of Australia.

Support

No report or presentation can cover every eventuality. JTA support staff and consultants are accessible to answer clients questions, explain results and assessments to employees, assist with the consultation required under the regulations or when dealing with the authorities.

Grace under pressure

We understand the need for flexibility. Rushed reports, changed priorities and impossible deadlines are a fact of life in the business world. Grace under pressure is what we strive for. Low stress service to our clients.

Communication - Information to use, not confuse

We put a lot of effort into communication. Drawing on a considerable database, our reports and presentations are designed to be easily understood, including practical and useful working procedures, standard letters and instructions. We respect our clients' intelligence and time - no padding, no jargon.

Training

Over ten years of OHS&E training experience, both in development and presentation of OHS&E training coupled with an intimate knowledge of OHS Legislation, technical issues and how to get things working, cannot be duplicated. The old trainer's trick of turning difficult questions back to the group - "What does the group think about that?" - is just not good enough when someone wants to know what they have to do about storing toxic chemicals or the dangers of magnetic fields from their switchboard.

Our Clients

JTA is looking long term. Our aim is to win clients by demonstrating that we are the best - whether it's the workers or the accountant who is doing the assessment. This approach has built a healthy client base, JTA enjoys varied consulting assignments in the OHS&E areas across a broad range of industry, commerce and government. We are proud of our clients who include many of the heavyweights, but also, many dynamic small companies. Some of the more prominent:
