The Mummy Returns: That pesky mummy is back for more.

It is now 1935 (10 years after the first film, in case you weren't paying attention) and Rick (Brenda Fraser) and Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) are married with a nine-year-old son (played by newcomer Freddie Boath). Now settled in London, the family is living a peaceful and mummy-free life until news comes that Imhotep and Anck-su-Namun (Arnold Vosloo and Patricia Velasquez, both reprising their roles from the first movie) have been resurrected for display in the British Museum.

Well, since a mulit-million dollar movie franchise hangs in the balance, the two don't remain a tourist attraction for long and quickly resume their quest for world domination--with a slight twist.

Anck-su-Namun believes that Rick and Evelyn's son is the key to resurrecting the Egyptian God Isis, and kidnaps him in an attempt to bring back the long-dead deity. So, of course, Rick and Evelyn are back on the case and go to work busting heads and kicking undead butt. Wrestling superstar The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) appears as the Scorpion King while John Hannah reprises his role as Evelyn's wacky brother.

If you thought the 1999 smash hit was action-packed, you ain't seen nothing yet. Early reports confirm that there are roughly four times the amount of action sequences, culminating in a 20-minute WWF-style fight scene featuring an army of pygmy skeletons. Director Stephen Sommers, who hasn't worked on anything else in the interim, is determined to give fans of the first film an even more exciting journey this time around.

Brendan fraser, last seen in Bedazzled, received a hefty $12.5 million paycheque to reprise his role. Surprisingly enough, The Mummy series is Fraser's only foray into the action genre. Despite his incredible success with the first film, Fraser is more comfortable in the world of comedy. His last movie, Monkeybone, was a critical and financial disappointment, but he has had success with films such as George of the Jungle and the aforementioned Bedazzled.

Rachel Weisz, last seen in the critically-acclaimed Enemy at the Gates, rarely ventures ouside the world of period drama. Aside from her role in that World War II saga, she also appeared in Swept from the Sea (set in the 19th century) and the critically-acclaimed epic, Sunshine.

And expect The Mummy Returns to capture enough interest to warrant a third film. Yes, a third film is already in the works, focusing not on Rick and Evelyn, but rather The Rock's character. The Scorpion King.

And if that's a hit, this could be the start of a very profitable film series.--by Dave Nusair.
