HEMOGLOBIN:.....Hemoglobin is a part of the red blood cell that carries oxygen from the lungs throughout the body. Hemoglobin is a combination of globin chains and heme. There are two pairs of globin chains in each molecule of hemoglobin. Greek letters are used to designate the different chains. One pair of alpha chains and one pair of beta chains are found in the usual adult hemoglobin (Hemoglobin A). Unusual hemoglobins are named by letter (example: hemoglobn S, the "sickle" hemoglobin) or the location where they were identified (example: hemoglobin C-Harlem).

The kind of hemoglobin we have depends upon our genetic inheritance. Genes are "blueprints" for the body which carry messages from parents to children that determine characteristics, such as skin, eye and hair color, and hemoglobin type. We may inherit genes which cause production of usual or unusual types of hemoglobin or normal or decreased amounts of hemoglobin.

Hemoglobin disorders sometimes result in anemia. Anemia is a condition in which a person has a lower amount of hemoglobin than usual. If the anemia is severe enough, it may cause one to have an increased pulse rate, to tire easily, to look pale, and even to develop heart failure.
