X-Linked Alpha Thalassemia Family Support Network
ATR-X is an X linked condition,
which means the gene involved lies on the X chromosome. Only males are
affected by this disorder (they only have one X chromosome which is always
inherited from their mothers), females can be carriers but are not affected
themselves (they have two X chromosomes and the normal chromosome fully
compensates). If a woman is a carrier there is a 50:50 chance of her
passing on the affected X chromosome, if she passes it onto a boy he will
be affected, if she passes it on to a girl she will be a carrier.
