Journeys: The Literary Magazine of the Summer Residential Writing Program
The Philippines
by Matthew Pereyra

The warm rain dripped down the trunks of the tall coconut trees. Palm TreesThe water splashed while automobiles creaked across the thin, rocky road. Fields glimmered in the rain, swaying back and forth. Clouds blocked the sun and blackened the sky. Smoke rose from the fire in the chimneys.

As the storm lessened and the clouds parted, the yellow sun shone down upon the city of Manila. People came out of their shelter from the rain and were active again, shouting out to each other. The large, loud market center bustled with business, with people running in and out of the streets.

The humidity adds to the warm heat. The bright sun beat down upon every person's back. Warm shade helps to keep from the sun, but the heat is inevitable. Insects lay dry on the black pavements, frying in the sun. Black smoke shot out of the exhausts as tricycles, cars, and jeepneys.

Come with me to explore the Philippine Islands. The tropical atmosphere will fill us with calmness and relaxation. We'll have a great time at the beach and pools.
